Real Madrid make La Liga history with Espanyol win
Isco scored a brace on a historic night..
Real Madrid have endured a rather topsy-turvy start to their season. Zinedine Zidane's side has been in imperious form in Europe, but have flattered to deceive in La Liga, and found themselves ten points behind fierce rivals Barcelona going into their Sunday evening match with Espanyol.
The pressure was on Madrid's superstars to step it up after Barcelona extended their perfect record earlier in the day and they answered the call superbly. Isco took all the plaudits on the night, netting both goals on a night when Christiano Ronaldo recorded his 200th career assist as Madrid cruised to an easy victory in front of their home fans.
Madrid purred on the night and Zidane will have been pleased with a comfortable three points.
Espanyol offered a valiant fight, even striking the post late-on in the first half, but when Isco doubled his side's lead in midway through the second, the contest was effectively over.
Ramos and Vasquez each missed a chance late on but it had little bearing on the outcome.
In the aftermath of the Real win, a remarkable stat started doing the rounds on twitter that would leave Espanyol fans feeling a little nauseous.
By beating La Liga's 14th placed side, Madrid became the first side to record 100 wins against a single opponent in La Liga.
That's right, Madrid have beaten Espanyol a staggering 100 times in La Liga alone. It's a crazy statistic that Madrid fans will undoubtedly lord over their less illustrious opponents.
The historic defeat leaves Espanyol in 14th place in La Liga, while Madrid maintained the seven-point gap between them and Barcelona - the early season pace-setters.
Meanwhile, Barca were forced to play in front of an empty stadium after violence broke out surrounding the Catalan referendum. However, that did not stop Lionel Messi and co, who continued their early season march, easing to a 3-0 win.
