Why Nigerian universities has not resumed after ASUU called off strike
Since The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, announced what they called a ‘conditional suspension’ of the strike they embarked upon which lasted five weeks, only few Nigerian universities have called their students back
Recall that ASUU went on a nationwide strike on August 14 and called it off on September 18.
According to feelers, the following reasons could be responsible on why some schools have not resumed after ASUU called off strike:
Memorandum of Understanding:
Federal Government promised ASUU, it would implement the Memorandum of understanding in view of the October 2017 timeline agreed upon.
It’s barely some days into October, some schools might decide to wait and see if Federal Government would honour it’s agreement.
ASUU wants the Federal Government to order the release of fund for revitalisation of public universities as spelt out in the 2013 memorandum of understanding (MoU)
Second Semester Examination:
Federal government and ASUU recently had a conditional agreement with about 40 Federal universities and 44 state varsities across the country.
Before the schools embarked on strike some of the schools were about to commence the second semester examination
University of Jos yet to comply
The UNIJOS chapter of ASUU did not join the nationwide strike and 2016/2017 academic session exams will commence on Tuesday, 3rd October, 2017.
